Edmonia Lewis, a female sculptor during the late 1800s, identified herself as part African and part Chippewa and as an artist, her sculptures reflected this mixture.  Forever Free, 1867-68 was created to celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation.  Skillfully crafted, it also depicts the two cultures Lewis embraced as part of her identity.

In addition, Forever Free is one of the contributing factors behind the concept of creating an all inclusive aesthetic that would celebrate hybrid identities.  Puss och Kram (XO)
